Six Day Tonsillectomy Recovery – Tips From Anne
Hi all- About two weeks ago I found this website and instantly became petrified about the surgery from all the horror stories I read. If you are looking for reassurance, I have some to offer. Im 18 years old and have been told by ENT’s that I have needed a tonsillectomy for years because of my large tonsils and multiple cases of tonsillitis. I went into surgery, still anxious, but I came out in not too much pain. I returned from the hospital that day, still had my voice, and was fine with just taking tylenol. I asked my doctor to prescribe anti-nausea meds with the oxycodone, just as a precaution. I also was always able to eat soft foods, even though I am already bored of this diet. I tried the oxycodone once on my second day. I didn’t think it helped the pain for me at all, just made me feel slightly intoxicated.
Now, I am on my sixth day and have only taken the oxycodone twice. I really didn’t think i needed it because the pain was bearable for the most part. My pain peaked on day 3, and even on that day, I was so sick of sitting at home that I went to the movies and got frozen yogurt. On my fifth day, I hung out with some friends and got Panera (probably not advised but I needed social interaction). I came to write to you all reading this, while eating bread with jelly, to hopefully ease the stress of those of you who need reassurance that the procedure isn’t that bad. I would highly recommend staying hydrated, because I feel like that has helped me feel so good during recovery and really does help the pain. I also would advise you to ask your surgeon for anti-nausea meds in advance because it can help when taking all the nasty pain syrup gets to you a bit. I have felt everything improve since the third day, and now I’m just hoping the scabs come off gradually without bleeding.
