Michelle’s First Days

Tonsillectomy Recovery at 43

Hello. I am 43 years old and I had my tonsillectomy on 4/28/17 at 11am. Post op day was fine, I was groggy the remainder of the day and my family picked up my pain meds from the pharmacy before I left the hospital. I had my house prepared with jello, popsicles, protein shakes, ice, cool mist humidifier, and ice packs. I started taking my pain medicine the day I came home and every 4 hours. (Hycet). I am on schedule with my pain medicine. On saturday 4/29/17, I vomited. I had been forcing myself to drink lots of fluids and ate jello every 4 hrs each time I had my pain medicine. On sunday 4/30/17, I vomited as well even with fluids and jello in my system. I got a prescription for Zoran on sunday at 5pm and this has helped me with my nausea and vomiting tremendously. Im taking zofran every 8 hrs and Hycet for pain every 4 hours. My family is alternating taking turns being with me at home and helping with my daughter. This has been a huge help. You need the pity so go for it when it is offered to you. Today would be day 5. I am having a lot of pain even with pain medicine. I can hardly talk or swallow and can’t wait for the 4 hour mark to hit so I can take my pain medicine. Zofran has helped me eat in small increments lots of oatmeal, blended chicken soup, and protein shakes. I notice night time is the worst when I haven’t sipped on liquids for 2-3hrs. I am miserable. I am also placing ice packs on my neck but just desperate at this point. I am hanging in there and will probably need a stool softener soon. I read some people are also taking ibuprofen alternating with their prescribed pain med. I may try this tomorrow. Any other advice please send my way…

  1. I had my tonsillectomy 8/8/17. Yesterday I woke up miserable in pain, I hadn’t slept much. I felt extremely sick and found the pain extremely bad. It took me 2 hours to get any food in me to allow me to have my meds. I took my meds and had one of my strong pills to kill some pain – they gave me 2 for the worst days. I then went to bed and slept for the day. I woke up feeling almost better, I could talk, I had energy, I could eat (still hurt to eat but nothing to what it was before) it’s like I magically got better. I didn’t want to get my hopes up though. Day 7 today and I just woke up, very sore waking up and I think that’s because my throats is dry from sleeping. I took some pain meds instantly and had some water and it’s not as bad but still sore. Headache and ear aches are defenaitely a thing. I’ve been taking coloxyl to help soften stool which has helped. I recommend eating real foods as it almost feels better on the throat, I’ve been having quite a lot of toast and toasties, it’s good on the scabs. As well as normal dinners, to an extent. Ice cream and popsicles have been a saviour too. Medication was making me feel ill for a few days and I stopped taking it, that was miserable, I decided to feel sick is better then pain, but since then I’ve been ok with the feeling sick side to the medication. Hoping it only gets better from here on, not a pleasant experience.

  2. Tonsillectomy age 30 UK….

Had my tonsillectomy 19.05.17 at 2.00pm, I’m just going to tell you about my progress so far,

Op day…woke up very groggy felt sick and in pain, but nothing codiene and anti sickness couldn’t take away, got discharged about 6.30pm that evening, was very still much high the rest of the evening and just slept with little pain, kept on top of paracetomal, codiene, antibiotics, oral spray and ibrophen. Managed to get some soup and a yoghurt down me about 10.30pm…Woke up around 5am because I was scared of waking up in pain so i made sure i took tablets and took a drink….

Day 2… felt sore as expected but no more than a bad case of tonsilitus,
Again rested and slept most of the day, managed to eat soup, jelly and yogurt. Kept on top of pain medication and drank 2lts or more over the course of the day. Sleeping was ok but it’s just feels a bit weird as u can’t really lie on your back as your uvulva is very swollen and makes you feel like you can’t breathe properly. I did sleep though from 1.00am till about 6.00am.

Day 3… Felt the same as the day before, if you don’t drink in the night you wake up abit dry which makes it slightly more painfull and uncomfy to wake up to. With what I have read I have been expecting the pain to worsen but no think as Yet, maybe I’m a lucky one.

I went out that morning for a few hours fully medicated up with bottle of water in hand, as I felt ok… but boy was i wrong when I got back s couple of hours later I had no energy, cried and went to sleep for 2hrs, due to feeling utter rubbish.

Ate scrambles egg and beans went down fine. Even ate a few popodoms and chocolate buttons. Slept late again as still uncomfortable but very bareable.1am ish till about 6ish.

Day 4….feel exactly the same as the day before, keep expecting this to get worse but fingers crossed it’s just going to get better. Decided not to take codiene today just everything else as it makes me feel sick and spaces me our which I don’t like. Ate scrambles egg and beans went down fine.
Decided I felt fine so I spent 3hrs doing the garden, expecting to feel for after i didn’t, which was great just made sure I kept hydrated.

Even managed to have a small plate of slag bol that evening and a couple pieces of garlic bread. It did ache and throb after maybe I pushed myself abit but it was worth it. I slept about 1am again till 6ish, throat gets thickly sometimes which isn’t pleasent and scratchy but no think I can’t handle.

Day 5….. feel fine atm, just keeping to paracetomal again or until pain is bad but today seems fine. Hopefully this is it and I manage just like this.

I’m not saying it’s been easy but so far I have had an ok experience , my ears have felt funny but not too bad as for my tongue that has felt fine didn’t really swell …I did book this week of work but I probably could of gone. Also looked after a 4 year old.

Good luck to everyone and hope it’s an ok experience for you too. Xx

  3. You will get through it. After 10 days you will feel so much better. I had mine out 6 weeks ago now. Just take 1 day at a time. I just took paracetamol. In the UK they advice eating some scratchy foods. Avoid dairy at all costs.

  4. I had my surgery on April 19th ,2 weeks post op. Today. This has been the worst pain I have ever endured. I know I lost at least 10 pounds maybe more, I didn’t feel like eating anything. I drank a lot of soup broth, apple sauce, there were many nights when I couldn’t even get a popsicle down.
There is still some thing in my throat, and I go back to the doctors in the morning. 05/04/17
I had good liquid pain medication, throat spray, plenty of Cepacol lozenges, cool mist humidifier, and I had my worst moments at night. If this stops me from being sick every time my grandsons come home from dAycare then it will be worth gold.
You need a good support team, someone to do everything for you. You just need to sleep when you can, eat when you can and take your meds like clock work. CINDY

  5. I went through this in December and it was awful, woke up in tears one the worst days begging to be taken to the hospital for a morphine drip (big ask considering I am terrified of needles to the point of fainting). Blended ice pops were a god send, lemonade flavour only though, more intense flavours burn. I would break up 4-5 ice blocks with a tablespoon of water in my NutriBullet and blend until a smooth paste and I’d eat that. Keep fluids up like crazy or you’ll dry out and YOULL BE BEGGING FOR DEATH.
