Imelda’s Story
Hi! I am a 47 year old woman who has had frequent bouts of tonsillitis and tonsil stones since she was 5.
This past 18 months has seen 3 Quinsy throats(peri-tonsular abscess ). Despite trying to qualify for a tonsillectomy from my GP for over 4 years. I just was one bout short or the swabs showed it was viral tonsillitis. One GP suggested that I took ‘Selfies’ of my bad throat!
After a conversation with an older GP and another Quinsy I was referred for surgery. The surgeon couldn’t understand why I had not been referred earlier. I waited the 12 weeks (statutory waiting time in Uk)
I was told the day before surgery. Had a straightforward removal. Vomited after surgery and painkillers. Was discharged the next day.
I have taken Soluble Aspirin for the pain. I have drank iced water for the pain. I have had warmed wheat bag cushions on my ears for the pain. I HAVE slept propped up for the pain.
I am onto day 6. I do have an unpleasant taste in my mouth. I have eaten quite normally:toast;crisps;roast chicken;vegetables. I have not drank orange, black currant, lemonade or cola as these can irritate the throat.I have drank black or green tea as I have given up dairy for two weeks. I chew sugar free gum regularly. Brush my teeth 3-4times a day and gargle with salty water or alcohol free mouthwash.
Scabs are starting to fall off today,so am hoping for no bleeding. My Uvula is still swollen.
I have 5 weeks left of my Summer holiday and intend to have the best time with my daughter who has been a complete angel throughout.
I wish that I had taken stronger pain meds on days 3-5 but on the whole it has been worth it….I hope!
The pain of a Quinsy outweighs what I have been through these past 6 days.
Good luck!
