After a lifetime of tonsillitis, it was time.  I made the appointment.  Was I scared? Yes.  Was I prepared for tonsillectomy recovery? NO.  Can you be? YES!

Planning for and recovering from a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedure, (often referred to as T & A Surgery), can be daunting experiences. The days leading up to your surgery can be frightening. If you haven’t read up yet, you can find information on tonsillectomy methods, risks, costs, adult tonsillectomy, sleep apnea, and numerous tips for tonsillectomy recovery on the other pages of this site. I’ve even added pictures of a post tonsillectomy throat by each day. Study, talk with your doctor and consult with your friends about the decision to undergo tonsillectomy and adenoid surgery. Explore the pages created here to aid in your journey.

If you should decide to have tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, let us help you through the entire process.   Whether due to problems with sleep apnea, chronic tonsillitis and strep throat, tonsil stones, trouble swallowing, or a combination  thereof, you can benefit from the experience of others. My own experience taught me that, as patients, we need to advocate for ourselves. Ear, nose, and throat doctors are, by and large, extremely talented individuals. However, very few of them have experienced an adult tonsillectomy, and the subsequent recovery. I have. Many others have too. We share our experiences here at the adult tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy recovery resource center. As you’ll read in the tonsillectomy recovery forum, everyone’s experience is unique. There are many factors that influence the level of pain you experience, as well as the length of time required during recovery. The method, and skill of your surgeon can have an affect, but there are also many things within your control that will reduce pain and recovery time. I’ve tried to include as many helpful tips as possible within the pages of this online resource. Tonsillectomy recovery can be pretty rough, especially if you are unlucky enough to be an adult! It takes longer for an adult to recover from most things. Tonsillectomy is no exception. There are many things you can do to make it go more smoothly. I’ve published numerous tips here on various pages. I encourage you to read up BEFORE you are in the throws of tonsillectomy recovery.

Talk with your doctor, friends, family, and work as you prepare. You are not alone in this. Like you and like me, many others are facing or have faced a tonsillectomy recovery. I created this forum for you. The community of adults or parents of patients will amaze you and warm your heart. I read these comments every day and every day I am humbled by everyone’s story and their compassion for others in the midst of recovery, or the anxiety that often precedes a tonsillectomy. Please join in. Hundreds of other people, perhaps in your same situation, have shared their wisdom, concerns, tips, and questions about tonsillectomy, as well as their tonsillectomy recovery.

  1. Hi all,

I posted about a month ago when I first saw my ENT (who at that point said I didnt need a tonsillectomy just because I had big tonsils). Today was my 1 month follow up. After some serious meds last month, and a CT of my sinus (which are perfect) we have decided to go ahead with the tonsillectomy.

My “D” day is December 19 (Merry Christmas and Happy Anniversary to me). Thank you to all that have helped me come to this decision. I am now full steam ahead getting my house ready along with purchasing a few things (new couch, ice maker, and humidifier for starters).

I will keep you all posted on how it goes, but as of right now, I should be released after the procedure and already have my RX for liquid percocet. I also made sure to talk to him about alternative meds and anti nausea meds since we live 2 hours away.

God Bless all of you who are helping everyone!

    1. I had mine out on the 2nd of november all went well until day 5 — started to bleed, couldnt open my mouth never mind eat or talk — i only just said yesterday if anyone was to ask me whether they should get my tonsils out i would say a big fat NO —- its the worse pain ever — and i have got 4 kids

  2. I bled in two spots 12 days post op. they tried to carterize while I was awake and it was terrible. Finally had to be rushed into surgery. Set me back ONE WEEK!

  3. Anyone bled in 2 different areas and had to have one of cauterized? How much did it set you back? My dr. claims it would only set me back 1 day or so. Also, did you bleed again. I’m 10 days post op. I don’t want to bleed again I just want this to be OVER!!!!!!

  4. Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am now on day 15 post op and I can work 14 hours pr day as before, only minor discomfort in throat, voice back to normal, no complications like bleeding or anything during my healing process. I have posted my day by day ordeal under day 1, 2 etc but I would say that days 6-9 were absolutely worst for me. I’m also allergic to pain medicine so that made the whole healing process more nerve wrecking and interesting as the days went by and the pain got worse…

Anyways, good luck! If you are really bothered by a lot of sore throats like me, it is absolutely worth it, I feel so much better now and my breath is more fresh too 🙂

  5. Hey guys. I’m getting my tonsils out next week. Although I’m really scared about all the pain, reading all of your comments helped me brace myself for what’s coming. I’m already expecting a lot of pain. I’m concerned because i’m already pretty skinny, and im afraid of loosing way to much weight… Anyway, i just wanted to thank you for sharing your experiences!

    1. Hi, good luck next week. I only lost 6-8 lbs and didn’t eat much. Don’t worry it’s a temporary loss, as soon as the 12-14 first days pass you’ll get your appetite back and gain the weight you’ve lost, not to worry, most of the loss is water weight, not much fat..
