After a lifetime of tonsillitis, it was time.  I made the appointment.  Was I scared? Yes.  Was I prepared for tonsillectomy recovery? NO.  Can you be? YES!

Planning for and recovering from a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedure, (often referred to as T & A Surgery), can be daunting experiences. The days leading up to your surgery can be frightening. If you haven’t read up yet, you can find information on tonsillectomy methods, risks, costs, adult tonsillectomy, sleep apnea, and numerous tips for tonsillectomy recovery on the other pages of this site. I’ve even added pictures of a post tonsillectomy throat by each day. Study, talk with your doctor and consult with your friends about the decision to undergo tonsillectomy and adenoid surgery. Explore the pages created here to aid in your journey.

If you should decide to have tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, let us help you through the entire process.   Whether due to problems with sleep apnea, chronic tonsillitis and strep throat, tonsil stones, trouble swallowing, or a combination  thereof, you can benefit from the experience of others. My own experience taught me that, as patients, we need to advocate for ourselves. Ear, nose, and throat doctors are, by and large, extremely talented individuals. However, very few of them have experienced an adult tonsillectomy, and the subsequent recovery. I have. Many others have too. We share our experiences here at the adult tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy recovery resource center. As you’ll read in the tonsillectomy recovery forum, everyone’s experience is unique. There are many factors that influence the level of pain you experience, as well as the length of time required during recovery. The method, and skill of your surgeon can have an affect, but there are also many things within your control that will reduce pain and recovery time. I’ve tried to include as many helpful tips as possible within the pages of this online resource. Tonsillectomy recovery can be pretty rough, especially if you are unlucky enough to be an adult! It takes longer for an adult to recover from most things. Tonsillectomy is no exception. There are many things you can do to make it go more smoothly. I’ve published numerous tips here on various pages. I encourage you to read up BEFORE you are in the throws of tonsillectomy recovery.

Talk with your doctor, friends, family, and work as you prepare. You are not alone in this. Like you and like me, many others are facing or have faced a tonsillectomy recovery. I created this forum for you. The community of adults or parents of patients will amaze you and warm your heart. I read these comments every day and every day I am humbled by everyone’s story and their compassion for others in the midst of recovery, or the anxiety that often precedes a tonsillectomy. Please join in. Hundreds of other people, perhaps in your same situation, have shared their wisdom, concerns, tips, and questions about tonsillectomy, as well as their tonsillectomy recovery.

  1. I’ve never heard of that procedure. Is it new? I had the traditional scalpel with cauterization procedure and it went quite well.

    1. I think so, I found 1 guy on YouTube that had it done, I called the maker of the instruments he talked about and they referred me to a DR in my area, but I still can’t find other people talking about it. I think the spelling was Starion Instruments?

  2. What procedure did everyone have, I’m having the Entceps/Thermal Tissue Wellding on the 17th, I’m 38 and scared. I cant find any reviews on this procedure.

    1. I’m on day 3 and feeling absolutely horrid – really weak and swallowing is too painful.i cant keep down any food and feeling really sick. i’m being kept up at night due to the pain. any suggestions for stronger meds – i’m on codeine, paracetamol and ibruprofen… hope everyone is recovering well. thank you x

      1. Charlotte – water is crucial. You really have to get lots of it down no matter how painful. We’ve all been there, believe me. It actually will hurt more when you swallow if you are avoiding swallowing. The more you swallow the more you realize that you can handle the pain. You’re stronger than you think! Percocet is stronger -maybe ask for that?

      2. Also, if you are not eating anything and taking ibuprofen and codeine on an empty stomach, that’s a bad idea. Ask your doctor for a prescription for anti-nausea meds. These may go a long way toward helping you take your other meds and keep things down. You should call them ASAP, as you don’t want to get dehydrated. Just tell your doctor everything you told us here. They are there to help you – good luck!

  3. hello,
i got my tonsillectomy on the 29th and i think i caught my step dads COLD. Ive been coughing nonstop all night and im in a lot of PAIN. i dont know what to do someone please tell me what i should do… as if getting my tonsils removed wasn’t bad enough catching a cold along with it makes it unbearable 🙁

    1. I’m in the same boat! I got mine done the 28th n recauturized on the 29th and was up all last night coughing 🙁

    2. Kaylinn- call your doctor. They may prescribe a codeine cough medicine, not sure. Please call them today so you can at least let them know you have the cold/cough and see what they recommend. They are used to getting a lot of calls after people have tonsillectomies and they are there to help you through this!

  4. Hiya,
I need some advice asap. I am on day 6 now and this is the worst day, i was suprised after surgery to have minimal pain and well now its hit me, but i am really worried, i have looked in my throat and on the right side is like a red spot/blotch with a small black dot in it and it really stings 🙁 its not been bleeding as far as i know, does anyone know what this could be? Please help 🙁

    1. I’ m on day 8, and it’s not getting any better. I still have a fever, and my throat feels like razor blades and shards of glass mixed together. When does this end.

Dr tok out the splints last friday, and told me that day 5 to 7 would be the worst. This stinks.

    2. Staace – best thing is to go in and have your doctor check it out. It’s probably okay but if it’s bothering you, why not ask to be seen? Good luck!

    3. I don’t know if you already found out what it is but I actually just noticed a small black dot on my right tonsil bed as well, so hopefully it’s a bit reassuring that you’re not alone.
