Tonsillectomy Recovery Time
After a lifetime of tonsillitis, it was time. I made the appointment. Was I scared? Yes. Was I prepared for tonsillectomy recovery? NO. Can you be? YES!

Planning for and recovering from a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedure, (often referred to as T & A Surgery), can be daunting experiences. The days leading up to your surgery can be frightening. If you haven’t read up yet, you can find information on tonsillectomy methods, risks, costs, adult tonsillectomy, sleep apnea, and numerous tips for tonsillectomy recovery on the other pages of this site. I’ve even added pictures of a post tonsillectomy throat by each day. Study, talk with your doctor and consult with your friends about the decision to undergo tonsillectomy and adenoid surgery. Explore the pages created here to aid in your journey.
If you should decide to have tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, let us help you through the entire process. Whether due to problems with sleep apnea, chronic tonsillitis and strep throat, tonsil stones, trouble swallowing, or a combination thereof, you can benefit from the experience of others. My own experience taught me that, as patients, we need to advocate for ourselves. Ear, nose, and throat doctors are, by and large, extremely talented individuals. However, very few of them have experienced an adult tonsillectomy, and the subsequent recovery. I have. Many others have too. We share our experiences here at the adult tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy recovery resource center. As you’ll read in the tonsillectomy recovery forum, everyone’s experience is unique. There are many factors that influence the level of pain you experience, as well as the length of time required during recovery. The method, and skill of your surgeon can have an affect, but there are also many things within your control that will reduce pain and recovery time. I’ve tried to include as many helpful tips as possible within the pages of this online resource. Tonsillectomy recovery can be pretty rough, especially if you are unlucky enough to be an adult! It takes longer for an adult to recover from most things. Tonsillectomy is no exception. There are many things you can do to make it go more smoothly. I’ve published numerous tips here on various pages. I encourage you to read up BEFORE you are in the throws of tonsillectomy recovery.
Talk with your doctor, friends, family, and work as you prepare. You are not alone in this. Like you and like me, many others are facing or have faced a tonsillectomy recovery. I created this forum for you. The community of adults or parents of patients will amaze you and warm your heart. I read these comments every day and every day I am humbled by everyone’s story and their compassion for others in the midst of recovery, or the anxiety that often precedes a tonsillectomy. Please join in. Hundreds of other people, perhaps in your same situation, have shared their wisdom, concerns, tips, and questions about tonsillectomy, as well as their tonsillectomy recovery.

Susan: Sorry, I haven’t been on the site a couple of days, resting up and finally today, feeling some better. I read about your good news, and I am happy for you. Take care.
I was wondering how things are. Hope the rest helps. I just ate. And have a whole new lease on life. Call me the happy girl in wyo. We are full of smoke from a forest fire s w of here. Can’t see any of the mt ranges. It’s really dry. Hope it’s not like the 88 89 fire season that burned Yellowstone There was that much smoke then. Hope everyone has a good night. Bs
I had the best luck with creamed corn. Its mild but has decent fiber to help you feel full. One that I found that was horrid was baked beans. That burned like none other…

Those foods are really good choices. You could also do scrambled eggs, mash potatoes, apple sauce, and mac and cheese just to name a few. I am on day 8 and actually feeling a lot better finally. I still have some pain my thorat and was able to eat a cheese quesodila (sp) from a Mexican restaurant today which tasted real good. Finally seeing some light at the end of this tunnel. Two weeks from now, I will be sitting on the beach but I am not sure if I can handle a big, salty margarita for a while =(
Hi guys, I’m terrified! 19 year old mom of a 15 month old here. Due for tonsillectomy next wednesday, 7 days from now on the 22nd. I’m looking forward to the rewards post-op, but I am not looking forward to the pain!
Buying all the things I’ll need this Saturday.
-mini humidifier
-ensure or slim fast
-gum, no citrus or mint
-banana flavored popsicles
-gatorade
-cream of wheat
-apple juice
Hmm..am I leaving anything out? Any tips? Thanks everyone, your stories are very helpful. I’m glad I decided to research this procedure well in advance.
Stay away from bananas…you may want to have apple sauce, ice packs, bottled water, mashed potatoes, hopefully you have an ice machine – crushed ice to suck and chew on will be useful. You may want some chicken broth, movies, books, tissues.
Good luck!!!
Mashed potatoes, ice packs, chicken broth, and water I didn’t include in my list because I have them already. I do have an ice maker that can produce crushed ice, but not shaved ice like a snow cone maker would make as someone stated. I hope that will be okay.
Did applesauce help for you all? I would think it would hurt because it is slightly acidic, but it’s been recommended on every single site that I’ve been to.
Dare I ask…what are the tissues for?? O_o
Thanks so much, I appreciate your response!
Hello. I’m on day 7 tomorrow myself. It’s been a heck of a road. I have the ice pack, humidifier, use a food ninja to crush my ice. Main thing is drink a lot of water. Humidifier is the best thing to keep you moist. Also wake up periodically and take drinks to keep u set. Powerade and Gatorade won’t sit well on my stomach so. Apple juice is better for me. Take your meds and good luck.
A snow cone machine! I’m on day 2 and it’s been a life saver. Good luck!
Leslie more like an old horse soldier who hasn’t eaten. Getting hungrrrrry. Went to lunch with a friend and ate about a crumb of the tip of cheese pizza. Too salty. Back to ice cream.
Guess I’m not the only one on a ‘sweets’ diet 🙁 Haven’t been able to move past applesauce or pudding ugh. I’m doing saline rinses for the septoplasty and it’s REALLY gross up there. I was starting to feel better but my pain is back with a vengeance. Pill crusher where art thou?
