Kezia’s Tonsillectomy Recovery Story
After having enlarged tonsils for 8 weeks and constant fatigue, I had a tonsillectomy (22 Y/O) 21 days ago.
The surgery went fine and straight after I was able to eat a few teaspoons of jelly. I stayed in overnight and had a few teaspoons of soaked cornflakes the next morning before being discharged.
Hemorrhage After Tonsillectomy
The pain for me kicked in on the night of day 2. Day 2-5, I wasn’t able to eat anything at all, I struggled with popsicles and even getting enough fluid to take pain relief. The pain got so bad for me on day 5 that I rung the surgeon and said that I literally couldn’t swallow to which they advised me ice it. A few hours later I was in an ambulance bringing up a continuous stream of blood from a hemorrhage in my right tonsil. In the hospital the surgeon did a procedure to stop the bleeding and when I woke up i instantly felt better.
Day 5-7 in hospital was ok, I felt better. When I got discharged, the burning pain started from the scabs falling off. I couldn’t sleep lying down because I would wake up choking. I also had a constant cough, which I am certain was due to the scabs.
Day 11 was a turnaround day for me, I stopped taking pain relief all together and just relied on sore throat lozenges.
Today (day 20) I feel good! It stills hurts to eat sticky food (chocolate) and it hurts a lot to yawn, but I assume that will clear soon. Overall, the recovery was rough, much worse than I could have imagined but I think it will benefit my health in the long run! My tips are to sleep upright, ice your neck and use sore throat lozenges to suck on.
