Tonsillectomy Day 7 – Rebecca

how long to recover from tonsillectomy

Im 21 years old and I’m on day 7 since my surgery. I’m absolutely miserable. I knew going into this, it would be a challenge but this has really done some damage. I’m physically and emotionally exhausted to the point where I don’t even want to get up to take my meds anymore . I will cry to myself about twice a day just from being in so much pain and wanting it to be over. I didn’t eat anything at all yesterday besides the little cups of applesauce needed to get my medicine down. I’ve lost about 12 pounds already.

I’m barely getting any sleep. Only like 30 minutes a night and then I jolt awake from pain and then I just spend the rest of the night staring at my ceiling. this happened since day 4.

My check up appointment is tomorrow and I’m both nervous and excited. I’m afraid he’s not going to be satisfied with my progress. I’m a very pessimistic person and I’m also very paranoid. I’m expecting the worst honestly. But I’m also hoping that I’m just being my old crazy self and nothing is actually wrong. I have convinced myself many times that things aren’t going as planned.

I really don’t know what else to say. Sorry for rambling on. I just really need to get some stuff out. Please comment with any suggestions you have for me or anything really. I need to talk to people who understand.

  1. It took me a day shy of three weeks post surgery to be able to start weaning off my pain meds (although I was still on oxy intermittently for about a month) and to be able to eat more than Snack Pack pudding. It will get better!

  2. Rebecca i promise it gets better! Stay on top of the pain. Sleep propped up and use a humidifier. KEEP DRINKING FLUIDS! !!! I lost mine 11/10/15 🙂

  3. Hi there. I am on day 7 post tonsillectomy and found this group of postings during one of the many sleepless nights. I have found staying on top of pain meds and hydrating via drinking as well as a humidifer have helped. Netflix has saved me. Time is what you need abd i am hoping that the worst is soon to be over. Bedt of luck and think about the positives at the end of this

  4. Hey sweetie, I never comment these days, but felt the need when I read what you are going through. A tonsillectomy for an adult is usually really, insanely painful! The good news is that you are over halfway through the worst of it – I didn’t get out of bed until day 12 or 13, if I remember correctly. Have they given you good pain meds? Percocet was a lifesaver, it was the one thing that allowed me to get sleep. I would alternate between Percocet and Tylenol 3 every few hours. I would say take pain meds to the max of what you can take. Drink as much water as you can, pain meds can be binding :S

By the end of the two weeks, I had lost 14 pounds. There was a point that my family would not let me look in my throat because it looked so horrible. I barely saw my son for two weeks. It was truly painful, next to childbirth for me at it’s worst…I felt like jumping out of my skin. That’s why I tried to sleep so much, to be unconscious for most of it. But, even after all that, I wouldn’t change it! I haven’t had even one throat infection in five years and I used to get strep throat numerous times per year, before the tonsillectomy.

Also, if you can’t sleep, don’t stare at the ceiling. Set a TV up in your room and watch engaging series. I watched full seasons of True Blood. Sitcoms like Friends is good. They were comforting.

Don’t be worried about your check-up. You’re doing just fine and he’s seen this many, many times before. Everybody heals and copes differently. Please also don’t look up worst case scenarios online, just focus on staying as positive as you can. Stay strong, you’re almost there!!

  5. Rebecca keep your head up girl. We are in this together. Be honest with your doctor at your appointment and ask for better pain Meds if you need them. There will be an end, and things will be better over time.
