Tonsillectomy at Age 20

how long to recover from tonsillectomy

Charlotte’s Tonsillectomy Experience

Hi I’m Charlotte, aged 20. The reason that I had my tonsils removed was I spent a few days in hospital with it a couple of months back as I was dehydrated and was taking antibiotics through a drip, after 10 years of having tonsillitis about 5/6 times a year. I was so pleased that they told me I could have the surgery! I went and had the operation on Monday 9th November told me to be there for 7.30am, my op was at 9.45am. The operation went smoothly and all that day i just slept really. I came home at 9.00pm that night from the hospital. The doctors advise to me was to eat my normal diet and not to be just eating ice creams & soups etc.

When we was calling home my uncle got my burger and fries from MacDonald’s, i didn’t eat any of it it was so sore! That night i didn’t get a wink of sleep it was to painful. On the Wednesday 2 days after i went to the doctors, they told me that i had an infection but i couldn’t swallow tablets so all in medicine i got antibiotics, paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine (smallest tablets ever so was able to take these) and a spray that’s suppose to numb my throat. This doctors advice was different, he told me to keep to soft foods. All i have really been eating is ice pops and ice cream, until yesterday soup hurt when i ate it but had half a tin yesterday and the same again today! Also I’ve tried mash and gravy and that is not to bad in getting down. I cant explain how much pain i have been in through day 2-6, day 4/5 has to be the absolute worst! i didn’t get no sleep, the medication only seemed to be working for an hour then it would wear off.

So i went to our little small hospital (only for minor injuries) the doctor told me if the pain got worse then i had to come back and she would admit me to hospital, which i was kinda pleased about because at least then i could get a good night sleep with being on a drip, so i went back to the hospital but was a different doctor this time, he said that i was fit and well and there was no need for the hospital, not going to lie i was disappointed because all i wanted was a good nights sleep and all week i have just been crying in so much pain. Anyway day 7 i had a good nights sleep i woke up 3 times that night which was good took my meds and went back to sleep, last night was a good night to i woke up at 4am then that was it until 8 this morning. I have been trying to get solid food down but it isn’t happening today! I finish the course of antibiotics tomorrow so I’m going to try and get into the doctors tomorrow as I’m finishing all my medication of and seeing if its healing as it should do. I’m finally seeing the light at the end of this tunnel, as i thought it was end of the world last week. My advise to anyone who is considering this operation DO NOT DO IT UNLESS ITS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

Water helps to, i can only take little sips at a time but it has never hurt when I’ve drank it, although occasionally it does come out of my nose but guess its because my nose is connected to my throat some how. Anyway sorry for long paragraph, this is my views on the tonsillectomy.
