Oral Thrush After Tonsillectomy

What is Thrush? (Candida)

Oral Thrush or Candidiasis is a yeast infection of the mucus membrane lining of the mouth and tongue. It is often referred to as candida. Candida or thrush is a yeast infection caused by a fungus called candid. This candida fungus or yeast infection is always present in the mouth but certain conditions can affect your bodies ability to keep the candida fungus in check. For tonsillectomy patients, weakened immune system and doses of antibiotics can are the usual causes. Most people first notice a white tongue.

Since the mouth is abnormal anyway, many post tonsillectomy patients do not realize that they have candida or thrush. A white film on the tongue and sores are common symptoms of oral thrush or yeast infection. This white tongue may seem the least of worries but could indicate a yeast infection

Many of the visitors to the tonsillectomy forum have reported that eating yogurt or taking over-the-counter acidophilus capsules can help clear up the Candida (oral thrush). You might also try using a soft toothbrush to gently clean the area and rinsing your mouth with a diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide solution several times a day.

If these home remedies don’t work, see your doctor who may prescribe an antifungal mouthwash or lozenges to suck on .

Candidiasis is actually quite common among tonsillectomy patients, but quite treatable. Tonsillectomy recovery is uncomfortable without oral thrush. Don’t suffer with it unnecessarily. If you think you have thrush, call your doctor to discuss treatment options

Here is a photo of a fairly typical case of oral thrush (Candidiasis).

  1. I had my tonsils out a week ago and yesterday realized I also have thrush. My doctor verified it is on the walls of my mouth, on my tongue and in my Esophagus! So much pain, omg! So he gave me medication In the form of chalky tablets to suck on 4 times a day, totaling 2 hours of treatment.

    1. My 4year old had tonsils and adenoids out on July 17 almost a week later she started getting worse instead of better took her to doctors she has thrush !very painful like you have said wish I knew ahead of time this could happen

      1. Same thing happened to my 4 year old daughter ..how long did it take to get better? We are day 9 post surgery and two days into the anti fungal mouthwash.

    2. I had my tonsils out 3 days ago, and I have found what looks like a chewed chewing gum stuck on my tongue, it really hurts as it catches on my teeth everytime I eat and I don’t know if it is thrush as I don’t have anything on my tongue

  2. i had my tonsils out 4 weeks ago, I’m in no pain but have had the feeling of food stuck in my throat for weeks I’ve been given anti fungal tablets has anyone had this problem???? Help

    1. I had my tonsils out 3 1/2 weeks ago and have this same sensation. I came to this website to see if yeast might be the problem. I have not been back to the doctor.

    2. I found this discussion helpful.
It seems the scar tissue in the throat can take 3-4 months (or 6+ by some counts) to soften, but then this sensation will go away.

  3. I had my a tonsillectomy 10/28/14 this is worst pain I am so sick I finish my antibiotic on Mon 11/3/14 my tongue is white now. I call my Dr ofc on Monday due to the pain was told it will get better. When? I have not eaten anything since 10/27/14. Not hungry just in a lot of pain

    1. Take tons of probiotics. Also put coconut oil on your mouth and hole it there for 30 minutes. It’s antifungal and soothes the pain.

  4. I had a T and A done about 8 months ago at 34 year old. The worst pain and over all feeling ever. Not only are you in severe severe pain but you can nit eat, drink or even sleep. You cant laugh or cry or hardly talk! I have.a very.high pain tolerance and this sure made me feel like a dying cry baby. It was awful and I do not recommend it at all. It took several weeks and three visits to my doctor and ER before I began to tolerate it. As of today, only the areas where my tonsils used to be are white. It isnt all over. Could that be fungus or yeast? Over all now I rarely have a sore throat and my throat feel better . Also, its like the dr cut a little too much. There is a pocket o. One side from surgery.

  5. Maalox (milk of magnesia) swished for 2 minutes-2x a day-for several days will get rid of thrush. I’ve been battling thrush, along with loss of smell/taste, since my tonsillectomy two weeks ago. The Maalox started clearing my tongue after ONE application. I just tried it this morning after doing tons of internet research on how to get rid of this and get my sense of taste back. Don’t forget to scrape or brush all that crud off your tongue when it starts to die off. Also, change your toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash so you don’t get an overgrowth again. Good luck and speedy recovery to all!
