Viral or Bacterial with Pictures

Winter brings with it beautiful snow falls, nights in front of the fire with hot cocoa, and delicious treats baking in the oven. Unfortunately, it also brings with it the cold and sore throats. While some are found on the shelves at your local pharmacy, other sore throat remedies can be found in your own kitchen cupboards.

Before getting to the sore throat pictures viral and bacterial, let’s talk about remedies.

Some remedies for viral sore throat are relatively simple. For a mild case, a couple of cough drops or some ice cream could be enough to calm it down. However, not everyone is that lucky. There are a couple extra sore throat remedies that prove to be more helpful. First, green tea with lemon and honey has lasted the test of time. The tea is full of antioxidants, the lemon cuts through any phlegm, and the honey soothes the pain. This warm beverage is one of the sore throat remedies that you probably already have in your cupboards.

While warm liquids often feel good on sore throats, some people prefer cold sore throat remedies. However, ice cream is not recommended as the milk can sometimes irritate some flues. Sherbet or frozen yogurt can be helpful or even cold soups.

Another one of the most common sore throat remedies is gargling with salt water. The salt does a combination of things. First, it cuts through the phlegm. Second, the salt helps to reduce swelling that may be in the throat. Finally, the salt helps to kill germs. The only downside is that it can be harsh on a sore throat. Try adding a bit of lemon to cancel out some of the saltiness.

One of the most extreme sore throat remedies is to have a tonsillectomy. If someone is prone to sore throats, the doctor may recommend that they have their tonsils removed to prevent any other disorders. While this method is may not for everyone, it can be extremely beneficial for those who suffer from regular sore throats.

If you have the luxury of staying home with your sickness, you have other options for sore throat remedies. For example, people underestimate the power of a hot bath. It warms up the whole body and gets the blood flowing. The steam may be enough to calm the throat, but there are additives you can put in the water to increase the healing power. Try adding some essential oils such as lavender or lemongrass. As the warm water heats up the oil, it will waft upwards for you to breath in. Not only does it smell nice, it can have a healing effect on your throat.

Of course, there are many medicines that you can take as sore throat remedies. Some are meant to dull the pain. Others are meant to reduce the swelling so you can eat and drink with more ease. Many reduce the amount of phlegm in the throat. You will have to judge which type of medicine will work best for you based on your symptoms.

It should be noted that some causes of sore throat require treatment.  Strep throat or streptococcal bacteria can cause damage to the heart if not treated.  Seek medical attention if your sore throat is accompanied by fever.

  1. My Chinese friend told me that when he was in the army, they cooked down ginger, orange peel, and brown sugar in a big pot of water and drank it. He says it’s the best for sore throats so I got the ingredients. I practically live on honey. I was sick for 8 months and finally got my tonsils out two days ago after a long battle with an entire slew of antibiotics which rendered my body’s immune system helpless. I did suffer bleeding which had to be stopped at the ER yesterday, but I’m back to drinking. I am staying as hydrated as possible!
